Mineral exploration must be enabled to revive South Africa’s mining sector

“Our ongoing investment in mineral exploration is creating jobs and delivering lasting benefits to regional communities across the state,” says Western Australia Mines Minister David Michael, whose message needs to be impressed on the South African government, which is fully aware of the need for jobs and community development but has failed to deliver its phased-in commissioning of a mineral cadastre system.

In the past 100 years, South Africa’s mining sector has done more to build the South African economy than any other sector and, as Minerals Council South Africa points out, it still has the potential to do the same in the next 100 years. But government has to play its role and exploration enabling is a key starting point.
